What is a Sphygmomanometer Used For?

A sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a mechanism to produce inflation which may be operated manually or electrically, and a measuring unit.

What Does a Sphygmomanometer Measure?

A sphygmomanometer measure systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This reading is usually presented as systolic over diastolic. An example blood pressure reading might be 120/80.

How Does a Sphygmomanometer Work?

The cuff of the sphygmomanometer is placed over the brachial artery in the crook of the arm and inflated to a level well above the anticipated systolic pressure. The cuff pressure slowly drops as the valve is opened. When the arterial systolic pressure equals the pressure of the cuff, blood starts to flow past the cuff, producing audible sounds from blood flow turbulence. The sounds of blood flow will continue until the pressure of the cuff drops below the arterial diastolic pressure. The diastolic pressure is the pressure when the blood flow sound stops. A stethoscope is used to hear these sounds and the cuff pressure is recorded.
