What is a Cardiac Holter Monitor?

If you have ever undergone testing for a heart condition you may have been exposed to a cardiac monitor. It is important to understand the function of these monitors and how they differ from each other. At Danlee Medical Products, Inc., we provide Holter monitors and other types of devices to assist medical professionals to deliver high quality cardiology monitoring and testing services.

Cardiac Monitors in General

A cardiac monitor, which is also referred to as a heart monitor, is a device that enables the constant monitoring of the activity of the heart by the means of electrocardiography (EKG/ECG). Heart monitoring outside of a medical facility is done through the use of an ambulatory cardiac monitor the patient wears home. Through this monitor, a doctor can monitor the function of a patient’s heart over a period of time for proper diagnosis of irregular cardiac rhythms.

Cardiac Events

Any occurrence of irregularity related to the heart is referred to as a cardiac event. It typically refers to severe events such as heart attacks (cardiac arrests), heart arrhythmia (i.e. atrial fibrillation), or stroke.

Holter ECG Monitors and Their Use

A Holter monitor is commonly used as an ambulatory cardiac monitor. These monitors are portable and operated by a battery that records and measures the activity of the heart by continuous basis for a number of days. Doctors often repressed patients to wear these monitors anywhere from 24 to 48 hours or even longer in order to monitor for cardiac event such as a suspected stroke or an atrial fibrillation.

Difference Between a Holter Monitor and Event Monitor

A Holter monitor continuously records the heart’s behavior. On the other hand, an event recorder records only certain short periods of heart activity. An event recorder can miss a hard event when a user is not experiencing symptoms. However, a Holter monitor provides continuous monitoring that can capture an event.
